Fatigue Management
Fatigue is more than feeling tired or drowsy. In a work context, fatigue is mental and/or physical exhaustion that reduces your ability to perform your work safely and effectively.
Causes of fatigue can include; prolonged or intense activity, travel, hot or cold working environments, schedule, long shifts and long commuting times.
To reduce worker fatigue, Air Control personnel, including contractors must follow the outlined control measures:
1. Consultation between workers and management to create an effective work schedule.
2. Discuss allowances for delays on site and how to meet deadlines; minimising excessive shifts.
3. Implement a split shift where necessary whereby two teams change shifts half way through presences on site.
4. When workers exceed expected overtime hours, workers must take consecutive days off as soon as practicable.
5. Where a shift unexpectedly exceeds the maximum 14 hours allowed in a shift, personnel must seek permission of management and Principal Contractor.
6. Personnel have a duty to report signs of fatigue and fitness levels and concerns for their ability to perform required works.
7. Personnel have the right to decline overtime where they feel they can not perform works due to fatigue.
